Viruses Reveal the Secrets of Biology

Session Abstract

The battle between a cell and an infecting virus is won by the side that controls gene expression. I will describe how viruses commandeer our body’s gene regulation machinery and use it for their own amplification. Studying these virus-host interactions offers new insights into how we might counteract infections and has also taught us how our own cells work during health and disease.

Speaker Bio

Britt Glaunsinger is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Plant & Microbial Biology and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, as well as a Fellow of the American Society for Microbiology. She holds the UC Berkeley Class of 1963 Endowed Chair for excellence in undergraduate teaching and was also a Chancellor Professor. Her dedication to mentorship has been recognized through receipt of the UC Berkeley Graduate Division Distinguished Faculty Mentor Award. Her lab studies the molecular biology underlying virus-host interactions in our cells, particularly those that influence gene expression.
