Overview

In 2009, UC Berkeley adopted a campus-wide Strategic Plan for Equity, Inclusion and Diversity that called for all campus divisions to deepen their understanding of how the principles of equity, inclusion, and diversity can transform their work. The strategic plan also called for a process for each division to put these principles into operation within their workspaces and programs.

Recommendations

Toward this aim, then-Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education Catherine Koshland established an Equity and Inclusion Strategic Plan Working Group in the winter of 2013. The group produced the report “Full Participation: Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity in the Division of Undergraduate Education” that conveys recommendations for how the Division of Undergraduate Education (UE) can more thoroughly integrate the values of equity, inclusion, and diversity into its community, programs, and work processes.

Implementation

An Equity, Inclusion and Diversity (EID) Team was charged to move forward the report’s recommendations. The EID Team, consisting of staff from across UE, focused on the following areas initially:

  • Organizational Structures & Practices
  • Campus Relations & Communications
  • Community Building & Belonging
  • Education and Professional Development

This team has evolved (and is now known as the Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity Committee) and has the following mission:

To create a work environment that centers equity, inclusion, and diversity where staff can feel safe and supported to be their authentic selves, meaning that staff feel alignment between their values and their actions at work. The UE EID Committee serves as a platform for underrepresented voices and experiences to challenge and improve the norms of the institution, and a space to continue to expand our critical consciousness in order to better guide decision making and processes within the Division.
