Dear Campus Community,
After a comprehensive national search, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Tarik Glenn as the executive director of the Athletic Study Center (ASC), an organization that provides support to over 900 student-athletes who compete in 30 intercollegiate sports. Tarik has been serving as the interim director since June of 2024, and, under his stewardship, student-athlete GPAs have maintained an all-time high, with 27 out of 30 varsity teams having a team GPA of above 3.0. Graduation rates for student athletes are on par with the rest of the general campus population. In 2024, student-athletes had an overall graduation success rate (GSR) of 93 percent, and nine teams achieved a perfect GSR mark of 100 percent, while 18 had a rate of at least 90 percent.
Tarik brings a deep history and understanding of Cal Athletics and the challenges student athletes face. Tarik’s association with UC Berkeley began in 1993 when he enrolled as a freshman. He graduated from Cal with a degree in Social Welfare and a storied legacy as a member of the Cal football team. His connection to our campus was reignited when he joined the Athletic Study Center staff in 2014, following a Hall of Fame professional career in the National Football League.
During the past 10 years, Tarik has focused on building end-to-end support for UC Berkeley student athletes from admissions to graduation. His extensive partnerships across campus have helped give these students access to the resources they need to succeed in academics and in their communities. In the rapidly-changing landscape of college athletics, Tarik’s experience and skill will continue to be essential resources for our student athletes as they navigate these challenging times.
Please join me in congratulating Tarik on his appointment as the executive director of the Athletic Study Center. I am certain the ASC will thrive under his continued leadership.
With gratitude,
Oliver O’Reilly
Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education
