UC Berkeley accreditation reaffirmed for ten years

March 12, 2015

Dear Campus Community,

I am pleased to announce that the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) acted to reaffirm the accreditation of the University of California, Berkeley for a period of ten years, the maximum allowable interval.

The Commission’s action endorsed the findings, commendations and recommendations of the Visiting Team Report and specifically called out Berkeley’s “resilience and visionary response” to budgetary challenges, our commitment to undergraduate education as a “core dimension of Berkeley’s mission,” and the “pervasive implementation of the values related to equity, diversity and inclusion.” Moving forward, the Commission particularly encouraged intentional evaluation of strategies for supporting undergraduate student success and for engaging undergraduates with research faculty.

The Commission Action Letter [Commission Action Letter (http://vcue.berkeley.edu/wasc/narrative.html) ] is posted on Berkeley’s accreditation website, along with the Visiting Team Report and other accreditation documents from this most recent review [Berkeley Accreditation Website (http://vcue.berkeley.edu/wasc)]. The next comprehensive review will take place in 2024, with a standard midcycle review required of all institutions scheduled for 2020.

I want to thank all of the members of the Berkeley community who contributed to this successful outcome and all of you who make Berkeley the exemplary institution that it is.

Sincerely,

Nicholas Dirks
Chancellor
