Announcing New Online & Hybrid Course Institute

October 27, 2023

Dear Colleagues,

The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and Digital Learning Services (DLS) are excited to announce an opportunity for all instructors on campus to participate in a new program, the Online & Hybrid Course Design Institute. This program aims to provide faculty with clear, specific guidance on what a quality online or hybridized course experience looks like and create a space where they can explore a variety of approaches to designing a partially or fully online course for undergraduates at Berkeley.

Through participation in an asynchronous course site, individual consultations with CTL consultants, and connection with faculty in departments across the university, participants in the Institute will:

  • develop new approaches to designing activities, assignments, and assessments that align with evidence-based practices in online teaching pedagogy
  • create a course map with clear scaffolding aligned with articulated learning outcomes
  • re-think an existing assignment, activity, or engagement that typically happens in-person into an online learning experience
  • share course design, assessment, activities, and/or materials developed with the campus community

In order to successfully complete the Institute, participants need to be able to meet the following schedule and complete the identified deliverables:

  • January 23, 10 a.m.: Attend synchronous kick-off meeting held via Zoom
  • February 1 - March 15: Meet at least once with a CTL consultant to discuss your course map for an online or hybrid class and generate ideas for one detailed artifact that will be translated to an online format
  • March 22: Complete a course design map and submit it via bCourses
  • April 26: Complete a detailed artifact and welcome landing page in a bCourses site
  • May 3: Attend the Teaching and Learning Conference and present the detailed artifact developed during the institute
  • May 10: Complete all asynchronous activities in the course site

Upon successful completion of the Institute, participants will receive a $3,000 stipend.

If you are interested in participating in the Institute, please complete this application form by 5 p.m., Monday, December 5.

CTL and DLS will notify applicants of their acceptance no later than Friday, December 22. Any questions on the Institute or application can be directed to teaching@berkeley.edu
