2022 American Cultures Teaching Award and Student Prize

March 9, 2022

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

We are delighted to announce that the American Cultures (AC) Center is now accepting submissions for its two annual awardsone for an instructor and one for an undergraduate student:

American Cultures Excellence in Teaching Award - deadline Friday, March 18
The 2022 American Cultures Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes a UC Berkeley faculty member whose exceptional approach to teaching an AC course creates impactful and generative classroom environments that enable students to grapple with the complexity of cultures in the United States. Recipients receive a $2,500 grant and are honored at an annual award ceremony.

The first stage of the Teaching Award requires a nomination to be completed and submitted. While the nomination needs to be approved and submitted by the department chair, vice-chair for instruction, or another appropriate official, the nomination itself may be initiated by any member of the campus community (including faculty, staff, and students) as long as the nominee has not already received an American Cultures teaching award (see previous recipients).

Nominations must be submitted by 5 p.m., Friday, March 18, 2022. For additional details on the Teaching Award including the nomination form, visit the AC Center website or contact americancultures@berkeley.edu.

American Cultures Student Prize - deadline Thursday, April 1
The 2022 American Cultures Student Prize is open to currently enrolled UC Berkeley undergraduates who have completed or are completing a final project as part of their lower or upper division AC course. Applicants may revise or continue to develop any projects that they have already submitted in a previous AC course. Recipients will receive a $1,000 prize, and publication on the AC Center's E-Scholarship website, and will be honored at a virtual ceremony this May.

We encourage AC faculty members to recommend students for the Student Prize whose paper, poetry, short story, or other creative work from an AC course reflects an exemplary understanding of race, culture, ethnicity, and the diversity of the American experience. We also encourage undergraduate students from all levels to apply for the Student Prize.

Applications and letters of support must be submitted by Thursday, April 1, 2022. For further details on the Student Prize including the application form, visit the AC Center website or email americancultures@berkeley.edu.

Warm regards,

The American Cultures Center Staff
