Contributions and Distinctions

Carmen Foghorn was Director of the American Indian Graduate Program (AIGP). For over 40 years (1971-2017), Carmen Foghorn played a critical role in mentoring Native students at Berkeley while infusing her program with traditional Native values to nurture the well-being of students.


Biographical Sketch  

Carmen Foghorn was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico growing up in Isleta Pueblo and Navajo. She attended college at the University of New Mexico, and worked as an advisor for high school students at the same time. Carmen worked as the Director of the American Indian Graduate Program for 40 years at UC Berkeley. She has assisted over 1,000 American Indian and Alaska Native graduates since the start of the program in 1971. She advises students to incorporate their own Native values into their daily lives even though they may be far away from their Native homelands. Her leadership at Berkeley has made a big impact on Native students by fostering a sense of community for them to succeed at institutions of higher learning.
