Midterm Grade Reporting and Mid-Semester - Fall 2025

September 29, 2025

Please note: in the interest of making semesterly CalMessages more concise and making information easier to find, we are providing key information in this email and more detailed content in a new section of the Undergraduate Education website. You will find additional relevant links below.

Dear Colleagues,

The CalCentral grade roster is now open for instructors to submit midterm grades for undergraduate students who are struggling academically (i.e., receiving a D+ through F or NP in a course) or have not been attending or turning in work for your course.

Non-passing midterm grades can be an early sign of deeper problems and an indicator that a student needs help. I ask that you please submit your midterm grades in CalCentral so college advisors can reach out to those students while there is still time to address concerns. To submit midterm grades:

  1. Login to CalCentral
  2. Go to My Academics > Classes

The grade roster is open through Tuesday, October 21, at 11:59 p.m. (dates and deadlines are posted in the 2025-26 Berkeley Academic Calendar, see the Office of the Registrar website for more information). The course instructor of record may submit midterm grades anytime the roster is open and may update grades as often as they wish (for example, when a student has raised a deficient grade since the midterm). Midterm grades submitted to the grade roster are posted for all classes at the same time after the roster closes.

This “early indicator” system improves students’ academic and personal well-being, and I thank you for your support and cooperation.

Mid-Semester Check-Ins
I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage you to conduct a mid-semester check-in with your class. End-of-semester teaching evaluations in my courses improved dramatically after I began administering mid-semester check-ins. Please go to the Center for Teaching & Learning website for guidance on how this service can benefit both instructors and students.

Thank you for your assistance with this pair of important matters and for all that you are doing to support our students and our campus.

Best wishes,

Oliver M. O’Reilly
Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education
